HOUSTON (July 5, 2007)–Six Houston-area high-school seniors received a total of $9,000 toward their college education from the Houston Tennis Association, the Houston Racquet Club Women’s Association and the West Houston Ladies Tennis Association.
Meagan Stephens and Thinh Quach both received $2,000 Gallery Furniture/HTA scholarships. Stephens, who graduated from C.E. King High School, plans to attend the University of North Texas and major in chemical engineering. She learned to play tennis through the NJTL program and advanced enough to play for her high school team. She is teaching tennis for the NJTL program this summer.
Quach, a graduate of Westbury Christian School, is going to the University of Houston. He played varsity tennis for his school and teaches in the NJTL summer program.
Jessica Escobar, who received the $2,000 HP/ HTA/NJTL scholarship, will study architecture at Drexel University in Pennsylvania. She played varsity for J. Frank Dobie beginning in her freshman year and was team captain. She is also coaching in the NJTL program this summer.
Kaitlin Flaherty, a graduate of Clear Creek High, received a $1,000 scholarship from the HRC Women’s Association. She plans to attend Methodist University in North Carolina and study business administration with a concentration in professional tennis management. She played on her high school varsity team for four years and was No. 1 in singles and doubles in her senior year.
The WHLTA awarded $1,000 scholarships to Nancy Tran and Ricky Ardila.
Tran will attend the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio where she will major in biology and join the pre-dental program. She played on the J. Frank Dobie varsity tennis team.
Ardila, a repeat scholarship winner, is a sophomore at St. Louis University majoring in biology with his sights on becoming a doctor. He plays intramural tennis at St. Louis and is teaching tennis in the NJTL program this summer..
